Facts about Filtering Tap Water - Many Contaminants, Many Types of Water Filters

Nov 22nd, 2011 Troy Truman

Before I started doing research about the facts about filtering tap water, I believed that all tap water was perfectly safe for me and my family to drink directly out of the faucet. I have since learned that harmful toxins and contaminants can be contained in unfiltered tap water. Some of the worst contaminants can cause cancer, liver and kidney disease, anemia and birth defects. The most common contaminants are:
Arsenic
Asbestos
Benzene
Mercury
Toluene
Pesticides and Herbicides

Some studies I've seen have showed the about 85 percent of city tap water from around the United States contains some level of one or more of these contaminants. That figure startled me quite a bit when I first came across it. But not quite as much as these figures:

74 percent of people living in the United States believe their tap water contains toxins or dangerous substances.
80 percent of people think their tap water has an unpleasant flavor to it.
900,000 people in the United States become sick as a result of contaminants in tap water and 900 people die every year.
50 million people get poisoned to some degree by radon or radium, both radioactive materials, contained in the water that comes out of their taps.

Because you can only go roughly three days without water before your body begins to shut down, this issue is hugely important. Not only will paying attention to the facts about filtering tap water (and acting on the information) improve your health, but it can also save you money if you currently buy bottled water. Typical bottled water costs around $5 for every 120 ounces. With a home water filtering system, $5 will buy 5,500 ounces of water filtered in the comfort of your own home.

Here are some additional facts about filtering tap water: I've found that filtered was tastes better, much better, than unfiltered tap water. This also means that the coffee and tea I make with home water filters tastes better than coffee and tea made with regular tap water containing contaminants. There are many types of water filtration systems. Some of them include: charcoal water filters, water distillers, ceramic water filters, reverse osmosis, atmospheric water generator, ultraviolet water filters, magnet water filters, infra red water filters, ionized water filters and more. Some of these are better than others depending on what specific contaminants need to be filtered.

Ready to get started with this new information? The best thing you can do is continue educating yourself on this subject. And there is no better time than now!
